Title Slaves in Napa County - A Deed for Sale of Slaves
Date 01/15/1846
Collection Manuscripts
Scope & Content A deed for sale of slaves (re: St. Helena Star - Jan 30, 1883 p2 col2) courtesy of Mrs. Ida de May Wilson - April 1989. Photocopy of handwritten deed.

The title of this MS is misleading. This deed was actually recorded in 1846 in Virginia and regards a transfer of ownership of slaves as part of a dowry. The slaves were not sold in St. Helena and likely never left the East Coast; the deed was for an unknown reason re-recorded in Napa County in 1861 after John B. and Mary E. Scott moved to St. Helena. An original copy of the copy of the 1846 deed is located at the Napa County Assessor-Recorder's Office.
