Summary "Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo was one of the most colorful figures in the glorious history of California and the Western shores of the North American continent. He served faithfully as an important official, either in a military, diplomatic or political capacity, of three nations, in California, and he was a citizen of four such nations.
"This man would be serving one country in a high authoratative position when by a sudden cycle of events Calfifornia would find herself bowing to a new mistress. Immediately those in command of the new regime would plead with the General to assume some important position wherein he could keep the status quo in a state of suspended equilibrium and in each instance he generously responded and fulfilled his mission as no other man, living, could do.
Although more proud of his Spanish ancestry and his inheritance as a citizen of the United States, than his citizenship of any other country, still country affiliation seemed to have little importance to this great man. He lived mainly, apparently, to carry out the commandment, 'Go thou and be thy brother's keeper.' From boyhood to the time when he became an old man, it seemed that the affairs of his beloved California continuously hung in a state of quivering balance and that, time and time again, horrible disater was averted only by his logic, wisdom and action. Never one moment did it seem safe for him to relax his firm grip on the vital affairs of his state...In this book the true story of the Bear Flag Revolt is told. A different story to that commonly known."
