Collection HRI Photo Album: County of Napa Unincorporated Areas
Description Black and white photograph from the County of Napa Unincorporated Areas Historic Resources Inventory (HRI) of Winans Vault on Foothill Blvd. (west of Lincoln Ave.), Calistoga.

The vault is on the hillside at the corner of Kortum Canyon and Foothill Blvd. It was the former site of the house of Ezra Badlam, Sam Brannan's nephew. Badlam built the vault in 1870 using stone brought from China by Joseph W. Winans, a San Francisco lawyer who had married his daughter Sarah. It once held the remains of Mary Badlam, Alexander Badlam Sr., Joseph W. Winans Sr., Joseph W. Winans Jr., Gerard C. Winans, Patrick Brannan, Don Francisco Brannan, Gerard C. Meagher, and Mary L. Meagher, although all were reinterred in the St. Helena Cemetery in 1919. The vault was damaged by a later proeprty owner, Harry Patten, when he tried to blow it up.
